Coins of Light:

Building Your Spiritual Armor Through Tzedaka

Av 7  5785 - Adopted from todays Tanya, Iggeret HaKodesh 3

“He put on righteousness like a coat of armor and salvation like a crown.” (Yeshayahu / Isaiah 59:18)

The sages teach us something astonishing:

Think of a suit of armor. It isn’t one solid plate. It’s made of hundreds of tiny scales, each one seemingly insignificant on its own. But when they overlap, they form an impenetrable shield.

So it is with Tzedaka. Every coin, every act of kindness, no matter how small, weaves into something vast and eternal, a spiritual armor protecting you, embracing you.

But this is not just about protection from harm. This armor is alive. It is woven from a Divine energy that transcends creation itself, the Infinite Light, what the Zohar calls Sovev Kol Almin, a light so boundless it cannot be contained within any world.

When you give, you are not just performing a kind gesture. You are aligning with the very desire of the Creator that brought existence into being. You are touching Infinity.

And then something miraculous happens: That transcendent light doesn’t stay “out there.” It flows downward through the architecture of existence, through the luminous spheres, the Sefirot, that form every level of reality, from the highest consciousness to our physical world.

Kabbalah explains there are two forms of Divine energy: the “inner light” (Or Pnimi), the energy that custom-fits and sustains each creation, and the “surrounding light” (Or Makif), the boundless radiance that embraces all equally.

A Mitzvah, and especially Tzedaka, draws down that surrounding light. It creates a spiritual garment that envelopes your soul, allowing it to experience an intimate union with the Divine, what the mystics call the merging of Kudsha Brich Hu (the Holy One) and His Shechinah (Divine Presence).

This garment not only carries you through life but also gives your soul the ability to taste the Infinite in the afterlife, the exquisite realms known as the Lower and Upper Garden of Eden.

This is why our sages say: “The reward of a Mitzvah is not in this world.”
Because here, in this finite world, we simply cannot contain the full brilliance of Infinite light. We experience only refracted rays.

And yet, here lies the paradox: Of all the Mitzvot, Tzedaka is unique. Its fruits are tasted even in this life, longer days, increased abundance, deeper joy. The spiritual shield allows light to seep even into your physical reality, nurturing you and protecting you.

Every act of giving strengthens that shield, seals its tiny openings, and ensures that even the most challenging forces cannot pierce your soul’s armor.

This is the deeper meaning of our sages’ words: “Every coin counts toward a great account.” Each gesture, each small kindness, links you to the Infinite, clothing your soul with a Divine radiance, a shield no arrow, physical or spiritual, can ever penetrate.
